Peter Marino Art Foundation Opens 2024 Season with Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne Exhibition

From May 25 to September 28, 2024, the Peter Marino Art Foundation in Southampton, New York, presents a summer-long exhibition of more than 40 works by Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne, and rotating exhibitions of contemporary works by Richard Deacon and McArthur Binion.

Architect Peter Marino curates the entire exhibition throughout the “house museum” with works from his personal collection spanning from Ancient Egypt to the present day in a meticulously restored late 19th century landmark building.

Complementing the exhibition programming is the Foundation’s signature event series “Brunch with Bob.” Hosted by Co-Associate Directors Bob Colacello and Isabelle Marino and joined by Peter Marino, each art talk consists of an intimate conversation with a featured guest(s) set amongst the installation of their art. Featuring in 2024 are Richard Deacon on May 25, The Lalannes with Jean-Gabriel Mitterrand and Jane Holzer on June 22, and McArthur Binion on July 22.

In addition, the “Peter Marino Book Club”, a series of author talks and book signings, returns for its second year. Peter Marino will present his upcoming book Ten Modern Houses on August 3 followed by Rashid Johnson who will present his recent book Rashid Johnson from Phaidon’s Contemporary Artist Series on August 17.

The Peter Marino Art Foundation is open to the public for guided tours on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from May 25 through September 28, 2024. All visits are by timed entry. Advance reservations are recommended.

The Lalannes

May 25 – September 28, 2024

Known individually and collectively since the 1960s as “Les Lalannes,” Claude and François-Xavier were pioneers of surrealist sculpture. Inspired largely by nature, Claude’s (1924-2019) works were drawn from the flora of her surroundings while François-Xavier (1927-2008) is renowned for his life-size sculptures of animals. Now 60 years since their debut show in Paris, more than 40 works from Peter Marino’s private collection are featured in the Foundation’s summer-long exhibition in commemoration of his longstanding friendship with the couple. Visitors will be transported to Mr. Marino’s Southampton gardens complete with life-sized photographs showcasing Lalanne sculptures placed in-situ alongside installations of a full menagerie of enchanting works.

Among the highlights on view are Claude’s Très Grand Choupatte (2007), Lapin Au Victoire (2001) and
Banc Crocodiles (2009), and François-Xavier’s Grand Chat Polymorphe (1998), Les Trois Grands Moutons de Peter (2004) and Lapin À Vent (1968/1994).

Richard Deacon

May 25 – July 13, 2024

Kicking off the summer are fifteen sculptures and drawings by Turner Prize winner Richard Deacon (b. 1949), a leading British sculptor. Deacon’s works are characterized by a controlled, abstract structure that is combined with an imaginative and unexpected use of everyday materials such as wood or ceramics. He works on both domestic and large scales, combining organic forms with elements of engineering. Transformation is a constant motif in his works which often explore the interactions between surface and space, interior and exterior, mass and lightness, motion and calm.

McArthur Binion

July 20 – September 28, 2024

Thirteen paintings by Chicago-based artist McArthur Binion (b. 1946) highlight a mid-summer show. Highly influenced by language and music, Binion combines collage, drawing, and painting to create complex autobiographical abstractions of painted minimalist patterns over an “under conscious” of personal documents and photographs. Sourcing narratives of an African American experience in rural America and his presence in the white-dominated heyday of American Modernism in New York City, Binion has developed a unique style of action painting which places personal memory in dialogue with visual elements of Modernism.
