A Look Back at 2023
In 2023, the Peter Marino Art Foundation welcomed thousands of visitors from around the world who enjoyed works spanning from Ancient Egypt to the present day by internationally renowned artists.
Highlighting the 2023 season was a summer-long exhibition of forty-five paintings, drawings, and sculpture by German neo-expressionist artist Georg Baselitz (b. 1938).
Baselitz grew up in Germany amongst the suffering and demolition of World War II, and in the 1960s became well known for his figurative and expressive paintings. In 1969, he began painting his subjects upside down in an effort to overcome the representational, content-driven character of his earlier work.
In addition to Baselitz, contemporary works by Austrian artist Erwin Wurm and Israeli artist Michal Rovner were on view in the Meeting Room Gallery.
Both artists debuted their respective exhibitions at our signature event series “Brunch with Bob.” Hosted by Co-Associate Directors Bob Colacello and Isabelle Marino and joined by Peter Marino, each art talk includes casual conversations with a featured artist(s) set amongst the installation of their art.
Kicking off the summer were fourteen paintings and sculptures by Wurm, who visited from Vienna, Austria for the occasion. Wurm is known for his strange depictions of everyday life and his humorous approach to the Formalism style.
Fifteen Rovner works followed for a mid-summer show. Rovner joined us from Israel where she spoke about her passion for addressing current issues such as the human condition and climate change through her moving works.
Showcasing Mr. Marino’s photography collection were new installations of works by French photographer Eugène Atget, noted for his turn of the 20th century photographs documenting Paris, and Italian-born local photographer Priscilla Rattazzi, whose new series titled “Three Lindens” made its debut at the foundation.
The Foundation also launched the “Peter Marino Book Club” in 2023. The author talk and book signing series highlighted five books across five Saturdays in its debut season.
The standing room-only events featured several authors and publishers including Priscilla Rattazzi (Three Lindens), Peter Marino (Eugène Atget), Etienne Tornier who visited from Paris (Ceramics Trilogy), Nicholas Callaway (The Sistine Chapel), and Bob Colacello (New York Memories) who was joined by Elena Ochoa Foster who traveled from Madrid.
Thank you for joining us in 2023 and for your continued support of the Peter Marino Art Foundation.
